Warm ups and formative assessments using INSIGHT 360 software!
We recently acquired this software program to test in our classrooms. It will allow us to receive instant and expansive data on student achievement on a daily basis. Currently, students in our classrooms use CPS clickers to answer questions (for example, the CollegeBoard SAT Question of the Day- just to name one) and this software would be easier and more applicable through a device like a smart phone or tablet! We are able to gauge student understanding and progress daily in the classroom using software that doesn't impede the learning environment. When it comes to testing student comprehension and understanding, there is no more effective way. The most INVALUABLE asset? With BYOD, students who have their own device can download the APP and students who don't can use the class set in order to integrate Insight360 effortlessly into the classroom. |

Interactive Teacher lead & Student Facilitated Assignments through SUBTEXT & SCHOOLOLOGY
These programs allow us as teachers to design and create interactive assignments in our classrooms. It eliminates the need for multiple handouts/copies, separate tests, down time between grading and calculating, etc.
With programs like these, we get the benefit of instant feedback, assessment that is relevant and in the moment, and data that is both formative and summative. While we are reading a text, for example, we can pull other sources off the internet to enhance understanding (like videos or articles). We can also ask questions or give polls to gauge understanding. If we suspect the material isn't registering the way we'd like, we can test students on the spot and adjust the lesson plan. We can also highlight key vocabulary and take these terms to a program like WORDNIK where students can see it in multiple contexts. Students have the ability to highlight, annotate, and store notes. Finally, we can link to extension activities or test comprehension. These programs are a full-service classroom tool. They store and provide access for students from materials start to finish. Students get the instructional and background materials, the reading, and the assessment tools. Perhaps most importantly, however, is the ability to answer a question with immediate and extensive feedback. For example, if a short story references an idea that would only be familiar with an understanding of the Dust Bowl, we can go out to a resource and show students an article, image, or video to help further understanding. Students can also write and submit assignment on the spot, in real-time. |
The BYOD Club!
Goals:
Get students involved who aren't using BYOD in the classroom. Get students to embrace their own education! Teach them how to use technology applications to benefit their schooling, and how to be facilitators of learning for other students at LHS! Not everyone has their own device, and some would LOVE to use a laptop or tablet during school, here's a chance for students to really get involved! |
Who?
Students who are interested in learning more about BYOD access and applications. Also, students who want to learn ways and practice using their own devices for school purposes. When? 2013-2014 school year Teacher-lead student achievement during school-scheduled Club Days. Recruit other teachers to run club during alternative periods and reach more students! |
Tablets in the LITTLE LANCERS program!
from Kate Lane, Lil Lancer Specialist!iPad – SpEd is piloting iPads with the certain PK classes around the county as part of a test. They have configured the iPads to run only the apps the SpEd team deemed appropriate for the curriculum. Part of the FCPS proposal would bring BYOD wireless to LHS (if accepted) and you’d be able to use those two iPads purchased out of your funds under that ‘BYOD’ umbrella. I would work with David Franceshina and the other teachers who are writing proposals to include that as a “side benefit” of having the wireless at LHS.

(Follow her on Twitter) submit this lesson that she used with her students:
"The lesson she submitted is a fusion of Language and Media. Before the iPads, she did speaking and listening exercises for her French students by passing out photos, having the students chat about them. But once she had the iPads in hand, she put them to use! She started by downloading the LIFE MAGAZINE app--which all photos. It gives students access to some of the most famous and thrilling photographs of our time. Her objective was to get kids to talk in French and get them writing! To do this, she needed to motivate them! She starts by showing the students the images from different places in the LIFE app. One student opens up the app and selects a minimum of 4 photos to talk about for 5-7 minutes. Another student opens a voice recording app and they chat in French about the images: what happened, why, when, where, how? Many of the images are older, dating back to the World War II era and some are specific to locations or special events. The students discuss and then complete a short writing prompt about of the images they viewed and discussed. For assessment, she grades the writing prompt primarily as well as some credit for speaking. (The writing prompt can be done on the iPad or on a wiki.)" This is easily adapted to other foreign languages. |
